Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about hypnotherapy, consultations and sessions. If there's something you'd like to know that isn't covered here, please get in touch.

How much does it cost?

You can find current session and programme prices on the Prices page. If you're unsure which type of support would be most suitable, please get in touch and we can talk through your options.

What ages do you work with?

I work with adults, children and teenagers. For children, the most important consideration is whether they can understand and engage with the sessions. Every child is different, so we'll discuss your child's individual needs during the initial consultation and decide together whether hypnotherapy is appropriate.

I also hold a current Enhanced DBS.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different, so there isn't a set number of sessions. The number of sessions you need will depend on what you'd like help with, your individual circumstances and the changes you'd like to make.

We'll review how things are going as we work together and discuss what feels appropriate for you.

What is involved with an Initial Consultation?

Your initial consultation takes place online and lasts up to one hour.

It's a relaxed opportunity to talk about what you'd like help with, what's happening for you at the moment and what you'd like to be different. I'll also explain a little about how the brain works and how hypnotherapy may be able to help.

It's also a chance for you to ask questions and decide whether hypnotherapy feels right for you.

A £20 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your consultation. If you decide to continue with hypnotherapy, this is deducted from the cost of your first session.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy combines hypnosis with therapeutic techniques to help you focus on the changes you'd like to make.

During hypnosis, you enter a relaxed and focused state where you can be more open to helpful ideas and suggestions. You're still aware of what's happening and remain in control throughout.

Solution-focused hypnotherapy focuses on where you'd like to be rather than spending lots of time going over the past.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution-focused hypnotherapy combines hypnosis with a positive, forward-looking approach. Rather than focusing heavily on problems or what has gone wrong in the past, we focus on where you'd like to be and the changes you'd like to make.

It can help you understand more about how your brain responds to thoughts, emotions and situations, while focusing on your strengths and what is already working for you.

Your sessions are personalised to you and the changes you'd like to make.

Will I be looking at my past?

Solution-focused hypnotherapy is mainly focused on the present and future, rather than spending lots of time exploring the past.

We may talk about what's happening for you now and anything that's relevant to understanding what you'd like to change. We'll then focus on where you'd like to be and what you'd like things to look like when things are better.

This helps us focus on practical changes and the steps that can help you move towards your preferred future.

Is it safe?

Hypnotherapy is generally experienced as a relaxed and focused state, rather than being asleep or unconscious. You remain aware of what is happening and stay in control throughout the session.

A hypnotherapist cannot make you do something against your will or make you accept suggestions that go against your values or wishes. You are always free to respond in your own way, and the process is collaborative, with the hypnotherapist guiding and supporting you.

Some ideas about hypnosis come from stage shows and films, which can give a very different impression of what hypnotherapy is actually like.

Can it help with my problem?

Hypnotherapy can support people with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, stress, confidence, sleep, fears and phobias, habits and other challenges that may be affecting everyday life.

Everyone is different, and hypnotherapy won't be the right approach for every person or every situation. I can't guarantee a particular outcome, but we'll look at what you'd like help with and whether hypnotherapy is appropriate for you.

The initial consultation gives us an opportunity to talk about what's happening, what you'd like to change and whether working together feels like the right fit.

Misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about hypnosis, often influenced by films, television and stage hypnosis. Here are some of the most common ones.

“Hypnotherapy is mind control or magic.”

Clarification: Hypnotherapy isn't mind control and there's nothing magical about it. You remain aware and in control throughout the session. It's a therapeutic process that uses relaxation, focus and guided suggestions to support the changes you'd like to make.

“I might get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis.”

Clarification: You can't get stuck in hypnosis. It's a temporary state of focused attention and relaxation, and you can naturally come out of it whenever you choose.

“I might reveal personal or private information during hypnosis.”

Clarification: You remain in control of what you choose to share. Hypnosis doesn't make you reveal anything you don't want to talk about.

“Hypnotherapy only works if I'm highly suggestible.”

Clarification: You don't need to be highly suggestible for hypnotherapy to be useful. It's a collaborative process, and your willingness to engage with the process is more important than trying to achieve a particular level of hypnosis.

“Hypnotherapy is only for quitting smoking or losing weight.”

Clarification: Hypnotherapy can be used for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, stress, confidence, sleep, fears and phobias, habits and other challenges.

“Hypnotherapy is just like stage hypnosis.”

Clarification: Stage hypnosis is entertainment, whereas hypnotherapy is a private, therapeutic process focused on the individual and the changes they'd like to make.

“I'll be unconscious or asleep during hypnosis.”

Clarification: You remain conscious and aware during hypnotherapy. You can hear what's being said, respond if needed and remain in control throughout the session.
